The neighbourhood

Het Oude Noorden is a nineteenth-century neighbourhood with the river Rotte around the corner. The Zwaanshals and the Zaagmolenkade are lined with independent places: coffee roasters, bakers, bistros and a city brewery. These are my favourites from when I lived here, checked in October 2026.

Good to know

  • A dam in the Rotte. Around 1270 a dam was built in the Rotte to hold back the water of the Maas. The town grew up on that dam, and that is how Rotterdam got its name.
  • Sawmills. Timber sawmills once lined the Rotte. They have all gone, but the Zaagmolenstraat, Zaagmolenkade and Zaagmolenbrug (zaagmolen means sawmill) keep their memory alive.
  • A famous neighbour. The painter Willem de Kooning was born in 1904 on the Zaagmolenstraat, a little further down the same street. In 1926 he left for America as a stowaway.
  • A swan’s neck. The Zwaanshals is probably named after the bend the Rotte makes here, shaped like a swan’s neck. The name dates back to the sixteenth century.
  • The first electric railway. The Hofbogen, a 1.9-kilometre viaduct with 189 arches, opened in 1908 for the first electric railway in the Netherlands. It is now a national monument.
  • A bridge that never opens. The Noorderbrug from 1911 has no moving parts. It was built so that barges could simply sail underneath.

Getting around

The city centre and Rotterdam Centraal are an eight-minute bike ride away. By car you are on the ring road within five minutes, and you have a dedicated space in the garage.

Public transport

  • Zaagmolenbrug7 min walktram 7 and bus 38
  • Noordsingel9 min walktrams 4 and 6, 7 minutes to Centraal
  • Station Rotterdam Noord16 min walklocal trains to Centraal and Gouda

Trams sometimes take a different route because of works. Check ret.nl before you travel.

By car

  • A20 (towards Utrecht and Gouda) in about 4 minutes via the Bergweg
  • A13 (The Hague, the airport and Schiphol via the A4) in about 6 minutes
  • A16 (Dordrecht, Breda and Antwerp) in about 7 minutes

Your car has its own space in the garage. Street parking here is paid, and Rotterdam only issues resident permits to homes without parking of their own. In this neighbourhood a dedicated space really counts.

By bike

Follow the Rotte and you are out of the city in no time: the Rottemeren lakes are just over half an hour away. The Kralingse Bos is ten minutes away and the city centre eight.
